PAHCOM: Professional Association of Health Care Office Management

The development of the Certified Medical Manager (CMM) program is an indicator of the membership's motivation toward professional recognition of their vocation. The program was developed with strong member participation and set high standards for attaining certification status. The comprehensive three-hour examination covers eighteen areas identified as crucial to the smooth operation of a physician practice: Billing and Collections, Coding Analysis, Communications, Compliance, Conflict Management, Employment and Payroll, Financial Planning, Health Care Law, Human Resources, Managed Care, Managing and Leading, Practice Accounting, Practice Marketing, Practice Structure, Risk Management, Systems Analysis and Design, Third Party Reimbursement, and Time Management.

The Professional Association of Health Care Office Management. Effort is focused on opening the communication links of such practices with each other as well as other health care providers such as hospitals, medical associations, medical societies, vendors and so forth. The motto "PAHCOM Shares Knowledge" states very concisely the purpose of the Association. The continuous pursuit of excellence in the management of physician office practices is the overriding long term strategic goal of PAHCOM.

NACE offers over 100 home study courses (many of which are online courses) for psychologists, social workers, marriage and family counselors, and substance abuse counselors. These courses are approved by the American Psychological Association (APA), Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and other state boards and organizations. There are two types of home study courses: those that are mailed to you for completion and those that are completed online. Are there actual full text articles in PubMed?
Yes, there are some free full text articles available. Some are provided by the journal publishers, and others are from PubMed Central(PMC), the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. Here is a list of the PMC Journals.

How do I find the free full text articles?

After entering your topic, a link on the right hand side of the screen will alert you to the number of free full text articles. Screen shots of PubMed.

Why can't I get to the article I want?

If there is a link to full text, but you get the dreaded "you are attempting to access restricted content" message, or a screen asking for a username and password or the link is no longer valid, and you still want the article, you will need to provide a credit card number for "pay per view" to the publisher.

Can I search just nursing journal articles?

Go to Advanced Search, and scroll down to Limit by Topics, Languages and Journal Groups, and under subsets choose "Nursing Journals."

New Clinical Practice Guidelines for Clostridium difficile Infection in Adults

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America is offering access to the new
Clinical Practice Guidelines for Clostridium difficile Infection in Adults
SHEA/IDSA
ICHE May 2010

This guideline is designed to improve the diagnosis and management of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in adult patients. A case of CDI is defined by the presence of symptoms (usually diarrhea) and either a stool test positive for C. difficile toxins or toxigenic C. difficile, or colonoscopic or histopathologic findings revealing pseudomembranous colitis. In addition to diagnosis and management, recommended methods of infection control and environmental management of the pathogen are presented. The recommendations are based on the best available evidence and practices, as determined by a joint Expert Panel appointed by SHEA and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) (the SHEA‐IDSA Expert Panel). The use of these guidelines can be impacted by the size of the institution and the resources, both financial and laboratory, available in the particular clinical setting.

MRSA Found in 4% of Healthcare Workers

According to Medscape Medical News, approximately 4% of healthcare workers tested positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a large screening effort, a new analysis reports.

Carlos Guerra, MD, from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, presented the findings here at the Fifth Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections 2010.

According to Kerri A. Thom, MD, MS, assistant professor of epidemiology and preventive medicine from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, other studies have shown a similar rate of MRSA carriage in healthcare workers.

Dr. Thom emphasized that all healthcare workers should practice Standard Precautions when caring for patients. "By following these guidelines, healthcare workers are protecting both themselves and their patients from the transmission of potential pathogens."

I've had some people asking for recommendations for a medical reference product that can be accessed anywhere. One option is eMedicine from WebMD. eMedicine touts its 8,000 professional contributors, and 6000 topics.

New eMedicine articles undergo several levels of physician peer review plus an additional review by a PharmD prior to publication. Sources for subsequent revisions of articles include the author, a physician or PharmD member of the editorial board, user-driven feedback, and systematically reviewed medical literature.

eMedicine has been around for over 10 years and in 2006 was bought by WebMD, a provider of consumer health information. WebMD is like reading a mainstream health magazine, with seamlessly integrated ads, and it's advertised on national television, so your patients have probably looked at it.

eMedicine is aimed at physicians, and is paired with Medscape, a site with medical news, selected full-text journal articles, and cme, and a company also purchased by WebMD.

Registration may be required to access all features, but there is much material available free of charge, though with integrated advertising.

Finding information about results of a clinical trial in the news can be a challenge, but this site, started by Dr. C. Michael Gibson, compiles results in easy to view slide shows, as well as tracking where the results are published.

Clinical Trial Results is an organization of clinical trial researchers whose goal is to objectively and rapidly disseminate clinical trial results to physicians & other health care professionals so that they in turn can educate their colleagues and patients with the ultimate goal of accelerating the delivery of newer treatments.

The site also includes a handy guide to the often cryptic Clinical Trial Acronyms.

IMRSER looks at the pertinent peer-reviewed literature and and relies on each board member’s extensive clinical, research, or other appropriate experience. Notably, documents developed by the IMRSER incorporate MR safety guidelines and recommendations created by the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), the Medical Devices Agency (MDA), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and other similar organizations.
